CHAPTER 13 â RIGHT INTO THE DANGER ZONE
âA broken heart bleeds tears.â
â STEVE MARABOLI
Golden rays of sunshine streamed through the window and Ravenna stirred in her sleep. Quietly, Arwin slipped from her arms and padded across the room to look into the valley. The morning mist still hung in the air. Red welts and bite marks spread across his shoulders and chest, thin lines of dried blood a testament to Ravennaâs midnight snack. Her dark hair lay across the pillow, blossoms in her cheek, and Arwin thought once again how his treachery would seem in the light of the day.
So simple had it been to lift the passwords from the drunken womanâs wristcuff, so easy to slip the secure token from where it nestled safely hidden deep within a concealed pocket of her clutch, and so different was she from Ruby. She played no games, this Wessel woman. Blunt as a battle-worn blade, Ravenna had bared her heart and soul and shared her love with him. There was no duplicity in her. Nothing but Ravenna.
Her chest rose and fell rhythmically. A tendril of hair trailed down her forehead and a peaceful smile was on Ravennaâs ruby-red lips. Dropping a kiss on her cheek, Arwin brushed the lock of hair back before peering into his wardrobe. Under a loose floorboard at the back of the closet, he had quietly secreted the replica token while the exhausted woman snored softly on his pillow in the dark hours of the night. Carefully, Arwin pressed it down with his foot now before throwing on black tunic and trousers. Glancing again at the sleeping woman, he then slipped down the stairs to the courtyard where traces of the night before still lingered.
Four bottles of lesh! He rubbed his forehead at the copious amounts of alcohol it had taken to render Ravenna punch-drunk. And my best bottle of Vulpeculan brandy. Ah, but it was worth it. His mind contemplated a promotion for the part he would play in securing the safety of the Geiten of Fyjerlan and Arwin dreamed of the golden stars and bars adorning the collar of his tunics.
He entered a little alcove to the courtyard with the dawn sun slowly rising behind the ragged clouds of the Cooling. Intricately carved, a stone statue of the Mother Goddess stood watch as Arwin lit a candle at Her marbled feet. Under Her watchful eye, he bowed his head in prayer.
